The Boxing Day fixtures got off to a rollicking start as Manchester United and Leicester City shared the points after playing out an entertaining draw in East Midlands. The Red Devils led twice in the game, but were let down by their defence as the Foxes deservedly earned a point. United missed the opportunity to close the gap with Liverpool and remain in 3rd position, 4 points behind defending champions and 1 point behind Leicester.
Marcus Rashford missed a sitter as early in the second minute after heading over the bar from six yards out. However, the England international atoned his miss by scoring the opening goal for United with a simple right foot finish from inside the box after Bruno’s outstretched foot nicked the ball into Rashford’s path.
Manchester United seemed to have plenty of control over the game as Leicester’s full-backs were not allowed to maraud forward. However, the Foxes quickly found an equaliser through Harvey Barnes, who thumped his left foot effort into the far corner leaving De Gea with no chance. Bruno missed a half-chance from a set-piece by heading wide, and later got booked denying Leicester to take a quick free kick.
There were no chances for either side in the opening stages of the second half, but Leicester dominated the possession and United resorted to counter-attacks. Kapser Schmeichel produced an outstanding save to deny Marcus Rashford after the United forward was played through on goal by Fred. However, it was United who took the lead again as Bruno Fernandes tucked his shot into far left corner after being set up by Edinson Cavani.
Similar to the first half, Leicester City provided an instant response after conceding as Jamie Vardy equalised for the Foxes in the 85th minute via a deflection of Axel Tunazebe. Although the Leicester striker had a very quiet game, he was in the right place at the right moment to steer Perez’s cut-back into the net and equalise for the Foxes.
