Tuchel laments missed chances against Real Madrid

Christian Pulisic helped Chelsea take a slender away goal advantage to the return leg of their Champions League semifinal against Real Madrid. The Blues dominated for most parts of the game after taking the lead, but lacked the quality in final third to punish the Spanish side for their defensive errors.

Speaking to reporters after the game, Thomas Tuchel admitted his side could have scored more in the first half. The German added “We played a very strong first half. Unfortunately we were unliucky and lacked compsure but we were very strong.”

But we conceded from a set piece. That’s pretty much the story. We don’t believe in these stories, we believe in ourselves and what it takes to bring the best performances. I have a feeling we should have won the first half, we could have maybe decided this match very early in the first half hour when we were so, so strong

Well we defend together as a team, the strikers have their part. We always defend as a block, with 11 people, so I don’t feel we are pointing fingers. The challenge was more to not worry too long, regret too long. We did this in the second half, we defended very well. We suffered very physically.

Tuchel praised Christian Pulisic for his goal, and also backed Timo Werner after missing a golden opportunity to open the scoring from 6 yards out. “It was well deserved and like I said, we should have won the first half. We should have scored a minimum one more goal. The goal came more or less out of nothing but that can always happen when you are faced with individual quality from Real Madrid.”

He (Werner) missed a big one at West Ham and he missed a big one here but it is nothing to cry about. This is the best thing about sport, nobody cares tomorrow. He is maybe angry. Tomorrow he has a free day and then the day after, he needs to get his chin up. We will never stop pushing or believing, I have the feeling everybody accepts the situation like this. Strikers it is easy, you score the next game and nobody talks about it.
