Rudiger apologises to De Bruyne

Antonio Rudiger has apologised to Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne after the defender’s cynical block resulted in the Belgian being withdrawn in the second half. The Blues went on win the Champions League for the second time in their history after defeating City 1-0.

A visibly distraught De Bruyne was reduced to tears as he was helped off the pitch after the collision with Rudiger. With City chasing the game, the Belgian’s creativity was sorely missed by City as they couldn’t find a way past a resolute Chelsea defence.

De Bruyne provided an update on the extent of his injury in Twitter today, stating “Hi guys just got back from the hospital. My diagnosis is Acute nose bone fracture and left orbital fracture. I feel okay now. Still disappointed about yesterday obviously but we will be back.”

Rudiger apologised to the Belgian through a post in Twitter, stating “I’m really sorry for @DeBruyneKev’s injury. Of course this was not intentional from me – I’ve already been in touch with Kevin personally and I really wish him a speedy recovery & hope we can see him back on the pitch very soon again.”

Belgium manager Roberto Martinez would be hoping to have De Bruyne in time to face Russia in their opening game of Euro 2020.

Speaking to reporters on De Bruyne’s injury, Martinez said “For me, Rudiger is very, very fortunate. When you look at the replay, there’s no clash of heads. He’s properly leaving the shoulder against Kevin. He seems concussed and we will see the state of that.”

But that leaves a sour taste, because Rudiger’s holding his head, it’s almost that he wants to show that he’s hiding something. For me, it was excessive force and it was reckless. And it should have been a red card.”
