Grealish targeting Champions League success at City

Jack Grealish has revealed he is targeting Champions League success in his first season at Manchester City after leaving Aston Villa on a British transfer record fee of £100m. The England international played in City’s Community Shield defeat to Leicester City on Sunday.

After being unveiled in front of the City fans for the first time, Grealish said “The club were so close to winning it last year, one goal away from winning it. That’s exactly why I’ve come here, that’s what the manager said to me when we’ve spoken. I look around the changing room and there’s so much talent and so much depth that I fully believe we can win it this year.”

“We have some of the best players in the Premier League and the depth in every position is just crazy. We’ll be looking to win that this season along with every other trophy.”

Having joined Villa as a six-year old, Grealish came through the ranks to captain the club. However, a release clause put in his contract ensured he was allowed to leave when City came knocking. Speaking on the transfer Grealish said “It was one of the toughest decisions I’ve ever had to make but it was just something I couldn’t turn down, the chance to challenge for trophies and play alongside the likes of Kevin de Bruyne who I’ve looked up to for the last few years.”

I reported back for pre-season when the manager (Dean Smith) wanted me back. So I went back fro a few days and it was obviously difficult because I knew I might be going going. I didn’t really train, I did some stuff on my own.”

I spoke to the team, the staff and the players before i left and I teared up myself. I felt it was time for me to move on, I’ve always said how much I wanted to play Champions League football and I couldn’t do that with Villa this year. I have a club here to have so much potential and they’ve shown so much faith in me.”

The England international admitted he is eager to learn from one of the best managers in the world, Pep Guardiola. He added “You see what he’s done with players here like Raheem and Phil. A few years back people were saying about Phil going out on loan but now he’s transformed him into easily one of the best talents in the world.”

I feel like he can take my game to the next level, I’ll be learning from him every day. I’ve been here two days and the way he is in training it’s just unbelievable, I can’t even explain it. Everyone here is so desperate to play under him, Pep was a massive factor in me coming here.”
