Young Boys secured a stunning 2-1 comeback win against Manchester United and gave a reality check to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team in the Champions League. United, who led through Cristiano Ronaldo’s goal in the first half lost their composure after Wan-Bissaka’s red card to concede two goals in the second half.
Manchester United, who were the favourites to win the game started the game tentatively, but opened the scoring through Ronaldo in the 13th minute from a delightful Bruno Fernandes assist. United looked in control of the game until Aaron Wan-Bissaka was given a straight red card for a clumsy challenge on Martins in the 35th minute.
Seeing the hosts take advantage, Solskjaer brought on Varane to bolster the United defence. However, the hosts equalised in the 66th minute through Ngamaleu, who toe poked his effort at the near post. Just when it seemed United had done enough to salvage a point, an ill-judged back pass from Lingard in the final minute of stoppage time allowed Siebatcheu to beat De Gea from the centre of the box and win it for Young Boys.
Speaking to reporters after the defeat Solskjaer admitted it was a missed opportunity for Manchester United to take initiative in the group. The Norwegian added “We need 12 points to go through. You need to win your home games, win one away from home and go through. A missed opportunity tonight, of course, but then again last year we won our first two games against PSG and Red Bull [Leipzig] and everyone thought we were through. So we have five games to get the 10 or 12 points.”
“It looked like a well-earned point and a good point in a difficult game. When you get the first goal you think you’ve got a great chance, it’s enough to win the game but unfortunately that sending off will always have an impact.”
“You saw the signs towards the end of the first half that they were going switch it and get crosses in with the wing-backs. I thought we coped really well. We were a bit lazy going out and blocking the cross for the first goal, a bit unlucky because it then gets deflected off Luke, and then the last goal, that’s just unfortunate.”
Speaking on Lingard’s mistake the United manager said “That happens in a game. That’s football. Up and downs. You’ve got big moments, you’ve got moments that go for you and against you. He’ll handle that one, and we’ll handle it.”
