Klopp not a fan of Atletico’s play style

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has admitted he is not a fan of Atletico Madrid’s play style ahead of their Champions League game against the Spanish opposition on Tuesday. The Reds will be seeking revenge after being knocked out by Diego Simeone’s side in the knockout stages of 2019/20 season.

Speaking ahead of their away game against Atletico Madrid Jurgen Klopp admitted playing Diego Simeone’s men away will always be tough. He added “If you win both games v Atletico it’s likely you go through. We lost both games last time though, so let’s see. I am not that positive to think we have this in the pocket. A tough place to go. We learned a lot. Second leg was toughest game in toughest circumstances.

We didn’t play well there last time. We learned a lot in the two games. The last one didn’t feel that important after that night. Now the world is in a better place, not safe but a better place. They have changed some players but are not a weaker animal.”

The German insisted that he respected Atletico Madrid despite not being impressed by their play style under Simeone. Speaking on this Klopp said “I couldn’t respect more what they do. Do I like it? Not a lot, but that’s me. I like a different style of football. But it just has to be successful and Atletico have been that, for sure.”

I think I said this after the second leg, I was angry, disappointed about lots of things, life and we had to focus on football in strange circumstances. They were world class and defended with all they had. That’s why I said it.”

Atletico are different because they play a different system, but they are still the results machine they were before. It’s incredible how Diego keeps them all on their toes. No criticism of that.”

Liverpool, who put five past Porto in their Matchday 2 win will be expected to score goals after they thrashed Watford 5-0 on Saturday. Speaking on their impressive goalscoring form Klopp said “It’s not easy but we don’t think about [the amount of goals scored]. We never make the difference between home and away games. We enjoy home games more, true. We love but it’s not a big difference. Now, Atletico, scoring 3 goals [again] doesn’t sound too likely now.”

The Liverpool manager also stressed the importance of having his players back from injuries to play his brand of football. He added “We need all our players to play our football. The better the players get the better you can play. I understand the question about Virgil, the best CB in world. But that we couldn’t play like that last year was more than missing him. We had no Joe, Joel, Ibou Konate was not here.”

Speaking on injuries, Klopp informed Curtis Jones will not be available for the Atletico game. “Curtis was only with us in the warming up, but will stay here before making the final step. Hopefully he is ready for United.”
