Man City defeat dismal Chelsea

Chelsea failed to register a single shot on target as Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City defeated Chelsea 1-0 at Stamford Bridge to move level on points with Tuchel’s men in the league. The European champions were completely outplayed by Man City, and had their goalkeeper Edouard Mendy to thank for some crucial saves.

Having opted for a more defensive approach by having Kante alongside Jorginho and Kovacic, Chelsea struggled to get out of their half as Man City dominated the possession and were the better team throughout the game.

After heading into the break goalless, Gabriel Jesus opened the scoring for City as the Brazilian’s shot deflected off Jorginho into the bottom right corner. Despite Chelsea’s improved attacking intent after the goal, the Blues struggled to find any clear cut opportunities to trouble Ederson. If not for a combination of some last ditch defending and Edouard Mendy saves, Manchester City could have easily scored three or four goals.

Thomas Tuchel

Speaking to BT Sport after the defeat Chelsea Head Coach Thomas Tuchel admitted his side was poor for most parts of the game. The German added “We lost the game and I think City deserved to win. For 60 minutes, until the goal, we were very strong in the last 20 metres of the field. The other 80 metres we were not good enough.”

We did not have ball possession to hurt them, to grow in confidence. It never happened in the first half, or second half. Until the goal we defended very very well in the box. The performance was not complex enough, overall not on our very best level and you need the best level to push the game against this side.”

Cesar Azpilicueta

Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta echoed his manager’s thoughts and said “We’re disappointed with the result. It was not our best performance. Especially in the first half it was hard to get out. We didn’t create chances and lost the ball too easily. After the goal we had a good reaction, but it was not enough to get something from the game.”

They were at their best level. We couldn’t keep the ball as we like to do. We made so many mistakes, ones that we normally don’t make. We tried to stay in the game. We lost the game after a short corner, which is disappointing.”

We are two great teams with great players and great ambition. Every game is different and every competition is different. We lost our chance to get three important points. Now we have to analyse what we didn’t do that well and move on to the next game. We didn’t lose the league today. If we’d have won we wouldn’t have won the league today either.

Pep Guardiola

Praising his team for their outstanding performance Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said “Today the guys were outstanding. At this stadium and against this opponent, to do what we have done makes me so proud. We came here and did our game. Sometimes you can’t do it because the opponent is better. We were encouraged to press high and they could not make the build-up.”

Gabriel [Jesus] always gives everything. You cannot say anything to him. Every single game he runs for his team-mates. Having these types of players makes me so happy. I’m so proud. We’ve done it at Stamford Bridge at the last Champions League winner. We’ve been magnificent together. It makes me proud, a little bit for myself but especially for the club.”
