Tottenham piled on Arsenal’s misery by defeating them in the North London derby and reclaiming the top spot in Premier League. A wonder goal from Son and a thunderous strike from Harry Kane proved to be decisive in a game where Arsenal attempted 45 crosses. Mourinho’s men have yet again put down the marker on their title intentions with a clinical and resolute display, while Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal have picked up just one point from the last four games.
Thomas Partey returned from injury as both managers made a lot of changes to the teams that played in Europa League on Thursday. The hosts in front of their home fans got off to a great start when Son scored his tenth goal of the season in a stunning fashion by curling his effort into top-right corner from 30 yards out. Much like other Mourinho teams, Tottenham were content to preserve their lead and allowed Arsenal to have plenty of possession. However, Arsenal couldn’t muster any meaningful shots on Tottenham goal and relied on crosses to feed a goal shy Aubameyang. Tottenham’s game plan paid dividends in the stoppage minute of first half as Harry Kane scored the second goal through a quick counter attack by thumping his effort off the bar at Leno’s near post.
Arsenal continued with their crosses in the second half and yielded the same result as Spurs sat back on a comfortable two goal lead. Aubameyang and Lacazette had a couple of sighters at the goal but couldn’t trouble Lloris as the Gunners found it difficult to break down a disciplined Spurs defence. However, the France international was at this best to parry Lacazette’s glancing effort away from the post for a corner. Arsenal continued to dominate possession without any meaningful intent and Spurs held on to comfortably win the North London derby and reclaim the top spot.
Speaking to reporters after the win Jose Mourinho praised his players for their work ethic and professionalism to get a great result in the derby. The Tottenham manager added “With all the respect for animals. I love animals. Don’t get me wrong. But working amazingly hard when the team didn’t have the ball. And for us these three matches in a row ended with seven points. The problem with Premier League is that the next match is against Crystal Palace and we don’t have any guarantee that we will win points. We go match after match. We are enjoying the situation very much.I believe that the public and the ones at home in front of the screen, the Tottenham fans are also enjoying the moment. And for one more week we are going to be top of the league, it’s good fun!“
